Preventing Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer in Singapore among men and women.

There is also an observed incidence in younger patients (<50 years old)

Colorectal cancer can be prevented with regular screening and a colonoscopy is able to remove pre-cancerous tumours known as polyps. Early detection is important.

Find out from a colorectal specialist if you are at risk of colorectal cancer; and if you are due for a colonoscopy.

Colonoscopies Save Lives – Pay No Heed to These Myths:

“It is painful”

Your comfort is our priority. You will be placed under sedation and you will be asleep during the procedure with minimal discomfort.

“It is an invasive surgery”

While the procedure is considered invasive, it does not require any incisions (surgical cuts).

If a polyp is detected and needs to be removed, it will be removed immediately during the colonoscopy procedure if suitable.

“It is inconvenient”

The procedure is relatively short and on average takes about 15-30minutes

The preparation of the procedure however requires clearing your bowels and this is to ensure accuracy of the scope so polyps can be detected and removed. This is usually the most inconvenient bit but is necessary.

You will be also given a medical certificate to rest for the day.

“There are less invasive alternatives”

The alternatives available include CT scans for example. These however require radiation, is less accurate, and will require a colonoscopy still if polyps are detected on the scan

A stool occult blood test is a simple test but does not confirm or exclude the presence of a cancer or polyp as it is non specific

A colonoscopy is the most accurate test to date.
